Simple, effective, and future-proof enough for me. TableFlip, by indie developer Christian Tietze, does something no other Mac app I know of does – it lets you create and edit Markdown tables in a familiar spreadsheet-like interface. Table syntax is part of Fletcher Penny’s MultiMarkdown extension of John Gruber’s Markdown format for displaying HTML in easily readable plain text. MultiMarkdown’s syntax for tables is handy for short tables, but can get unwieldy and complex with larger tables. TableFlip fixes that by letting you flip between a plain text document and a fully-rendered and editable version of your table. TableFlip can get confused when reading complicated Markdown documents. In the source file for this page, for example, the single pipe character in the third paragraph caused TableFlip to think that paragraph was a table. It’s easy to lose track of which column you’re working on because the contents of the table cells have different lengths and the pipe characters don’t line up with each other. But it does indeed make sense to offer a free iOS version from the perspective of customers. At least if they think about the Mac app as the real thing and the iOS app as an auxiliary means to access the data, for example. Or that in their mind both are the same and that you should pay $50 on the iOS App Store, too – but then get in for free for Mac.
